The ground rules
The person on the other end of a sales call is usually just doing a job. These lines are meant to be silly, not mean: no insults, no threats, no wasting a real person's time on purpose. Every level still ends by asking to be taken off the list, because that's the part that actually helps.
How to actually stop these calls
- Ask to be put on the company's do-not-call list. Say it clearly, once: "Please put this number on your do-not-call list."
- Register with your national do-not-call registry, where one exists. In the US, that's the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov. It reduces telemarketing from legitimate businesses but won't stop scammers or every type of call.
- Never confirm personal or financial details to someone who called you: not your name, address, date of birth, or account numbers.
- Hang up on robocalls. Don't press buttons or say "yes" to a recording.
- If a caller says they're your bank or a government agency, hang up and call back using the number on your card, statement, or the official website.
- Use your phone's or carrier's call blocking and spam filtering features, and report scams to your country's consumer protection agency.

Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to joke with telemarketers?
Keep it kind. The person calling is often just doing their job. Light humor is fine; insults and harassment are not. And with robocalls or suspected scams, it's best not to engage at all.
Will these lines stop the calls?
Humor won't. Asking to be put on the company's do-not-call list, registering with your national registry where one exists, and blocking or filtering numbers are what actually help.
Should I use this on a scam call?
No. If you suspect a scam, don't engage or share anything. Just hang up.
